Im Jahr 1873 nahm der Nordwestbahnhof seinen Betrieb auf und war Ausgangspunkt der Bahnstrecke der österreichischen Nordwestbahnen. Das Betriebsareal dieses Bahnhofes umfasst 44 Hektar, die umschlossen sind vom dichtbesiedelten Stadtraum des 2. und des 20. Wiener Gemeindebezirks. Seit seiner Inbetriebnahme ist das Gelände ohne Möglichkeit einer Querung, so dass umgangen oder Umfahren werden muss. Nach Einstellung des Bahn- und Frachtbetriebs wird das Gelände – als innerstädtisches Stadtentwicklungsgebiet „Zukunftsgebiet“ genannt – neuen Wohnraum zur Verfügung stellen.
Im Jahr 2016 begann Matthias Klos eine fotografische Bestandsaufnahme jener Plätze, Straßen und Flächen, die das Gebiet des Nordwestbahnhofes umgrenzen. Sein Interesse gilt dem schmalen Bereich – dem transitorischen Raum um das Stadtentwicklungsgebiet – in dem das Gegenwärtige auf das projektierte Zukünftige treffen wird.

In 1873 the Nordwestbahnhof started operating and was the starting point of the railway line of the Austrian Nordwestbahnen. The operating area of this station covers 44 hectares, which are surrounded by the densely populated urban area of the 2nd and 20th districts of Vienna. Since its commissioning, the site has been without any possibility of crossing it, so that it has to be bypassed or by-passed. After the discontinuation of rail and freight operations, the site - called "future area" as an inner-city urban development area - will provide new living space.

In 2016 Matthias Klos began a photographic survey of the squares, streets and areas surrounding the area of the Nordwestbahnhof. He is interested in the narrow area - the transitory space around the urban development area - where the present will meet the projected future.
